You can reach Tivoli from Rome in three ways: the train from Roma Tiburtina, the Cotral bus from Ponte Mammolo, or by car on the A24 motorway (about 40 minutes). Villa d’Este is at Piazza Trento 5 in the centre of Tivoli. Some times and frequencies are not confirmed in our sources, so check them on the day.
How do I get from Rome to Tivoli by train?
Take a train on the Rome to Pescara line from Roma Tiburtina station to Tivoli. One guide says the Tivoli station is about 9 minutes’ walk from the villa; another describes it as a little out of the way. We have not confirmed travel time or frequency, so look at the Trenitalia timetable before you go.
How do I get there by bus?
Cotral is the regional bus company for Lazio, the region around Rome. Its buses to Tivoli leave from Ponte Mammolo, a stop on Rome’s metro line B. Get off at Piazzale delle Nazioni Unite in Tivoli, then walk about 4 minutes to the villa. An unofficial estimate puts the journey at about an hour. The line number is not confirmed, so check with Cotral or at the station.
How do I get there by car?
Take the A24 motorway and exit at Tivoli. The drive from Rome takes about 40 minutes. The villa is in a pedestrian zone, and parking is paid. We could not confirm the names of car parks, so check a map on the day. The train or bus is often simpler. See also getting there.

What does a sample plan look like?
Here is one plan for a Tuesday to Sunday. Timings are suggestions based on verified opening and show times.
- Early morning: leave Rome in time to be at the gate for 08:30, when the villa opens.
- 08:30 to 10:30: the garden terraces and the apartments. See what to see.
- 10:30: the first show at the Fountain of the Organ.
- Midday: a lunch in the centre of Tivoli. Piazza Garibaldi and Piazzale delle Nazioni Unite are close to the villa. We have no verified restaurant recommendations.
- Afternoon: exit through the gate at Piazza Campitelli, explore the town, or continue to another site. See below.
The visit takes at least 2 hours. If you plan to be there for later, check that you will be inside before the entry window closes for the month; see opening hours.
What else can I add to the day?
- Hadrian’s Villa, the ancient Roman complex, is the classic partner. See Hadrian’s Villa and Villa d’Este in one day. We do not have a verified travel time between the two.
- Villa Gregoriana, a FAI park between the two villas. Entry is 10 euros full price; hours are not confirmed, so check with FAI.
- The Villae Pass if you want several sites on one ticket: see the Villae Pass guide.
Is a day trip enough?
Yes for Villa d’Este and the town centre. If you also want a big site like Hadrian’s Villa, the day is full. A tour solves the logistics, but costs more.
